Eyes Wide Shut

I looked

I looked long and hard

I opened my eyes wide

Wider than those of a newborn 

Trying to all at once, comprehend the world 

Into which it had been thrust so forcefully

I looked at you hard, 

But there was nothing there

I didn't see you at all till I closed my eyes

Only then did I begin to see what I thought you were

Which in fact was what you could become 

What you started to become after I told you what I thought I saw

I kept my eyes closed so I could see more. 

I trusted you 

I trusted you to lead me 

You didn't trust me

My eyes were closed but you kept yours open 

I thought I saw you 

But you

You never saw me

You never looked

You wouldn't close your eyes
